Integral Cup: India's Premier Mathematics Grand Prix Explained

Most quantitative finance competitions ask you to write code. The Integral Cup asks you to prove something.

Hosted by the STEMvibe Foundation and sponsored by Jane Street as title sponsor, the Integral Cup is India's premier undergraduate mathematics championship. It spans three seasons, eight distinct mathematical tracks, and a prize pool exceeding 1 crore. With over 10,000 participants and three escalating rounds of elimination, it has quickly become one of the most serious proving grounds for mathematical talent in the country.

If you're an undergraduate in India who wants to test your mathematical depth against the best—and gain direct access to research internships, industry interviews, and exclusive talent networks—this is the competition to watch.

What Is the Integral Cup?

The Integral Cup isn't just a competition. It's a proving ground for mathematical brilliance. Organised by the STEMvibe Foundation, which discovers and nurtures India's next generation of mathematical talent, the Cup connects undergraduate brilliance with leading academic institutions, quantitative firms, tech companies, and research labs.

The competition is designed not merely to test knowledge, but to identify minds capable of advancing mathematics through research, innovation, and applied problem-solving at the highest levels. It unfolds across two seasons, each featuring three escalating rounds of elimination.

The eight tracks span Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, AI, and Emerging Mathematical Sciences. As the organisers describe it: "A track is a specialised mathematical battlefield — a focused domain where theory meets problem-solving at the highest level."

The Eight Tracks

The Integral Cup offers eight distinct battlegrounds. Participants rank all four of their chosen tracks by priority each season, and performance across these domains—weighted by your choices—determines advancement. The eight tracks span Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, AI, and Emerging Mathematical Sciences:

Track 1: Integration & Analysis

Master the calculus toolkit for analysing continuous functions, computing integrals, and evaluating infinite series. Explore limits, continuity, differentiability, and advanced problem-solving using differential equations and transform methods.

Track 2: Linear Algebra & Optimization

Explore vector spaces, linear transformations, and eigenvalues while solving complex optimisation problems using linear programming and convex optimisation techniques in high-dimensional spaces.

Track 3: Probability & Statistics

Understand probability distributions, random variables, and their transformations. Apply statistical inference methods ranging from hypothesis testing to Bayesian inference and stochastic process modelling.

Track 4: Game Theory

Analyse strategic interactions between rational players. Determine optimal strategies and equilibrium solutions in both competitive and cooperative game scenarios.

Track 5: Discrete Mathematics

Combinatorics, graph theory, algorithmic foundations. The mathematics behind algorithms, scheduling, network flows, and complexity theory. This track surfaces candidates who think in structures, not just numbers.

Track 6: Number Theory

Primes, modular arithmetic, elliptic curves, Diophantine equations. The analytic and algebraic backbone of modern cryptography, coding theory, and blockchain infrastructure.

Track 7: Mathematics in Machine Learning

Numerical methods, optimisation for learning, linear algebra at scale, computational geometry. The mathematics that underpins modern AI, from gradient descent to geometric deep learning.

Track 8: Reinforcement Learning

The mathematical foundations of reinforcement learning, including decision processes, Markov decision processes, value functions, and other fundamental RL models.

Competition Structure

Registration: Typically, June – August

Registration opens for Season 2 participants, with early registration recommended to secure a preferred examination centre.

Round 1: Offline Preliminary Examination — Typically in August

Round 1 is an offline preliminary examination conducted at 50+ centres nationwide, including every IIT and top NITs. This round tests speed and foundational mathematical competency across your selected tracks.

Round 2: Online Olympiad — Typically in September

The top 500 participants from Round 1 advance to an online Olympiad. This round shifts from speed to depth, testing the ability to solve harder problems with more time and greater conceptual demands.

Round 3: Two-Day Grand Finale — Typically in October

The top 40 finalists compete in a two-day Grand Finale. This is where creative problem-solving and mathematical maturity are tested to their limits. The 2025 finale at IIT Bombay saw twenty minds clash over integrals and proofs in real time—mathematics as spectacle.

Prizes and Opportunities

The Integral Cup offers more than a prize pool. The competition has assembled a network of industry partners that recognise mathematical excellence as a signal of quantitative potential:

  • 1 crore+ prize pool across the competition
  • Direct access to Jane Street, the cup's title sponsor, research internships
  • Industry interviews with leading quantitative firms
  • Exclusive Vedanta Ganita Samanvaya winter camp for top performers
  • Talent networks connecting participants with academic institutions and research labs

The 2025 edition was supported by Optiver and QRT alongside Jane Street, and past participants have described the experience—including QRT office visits and dinners with Optiver—as unforgettable.

Who Should Enter?

The Integral Cup is open to undergraduate students across India. If any of the following describe you, this competition is worth your attention:

  • You're studying mathematics, statistics, computer science, or engineering and want to test your limits against the country's best.
  • You're interested in quantitative finance and want a competition that rewards mathematical depth rather than coding speed.
  • You enjoy the kind of problems that require clear thinking, not template matching.

The competition is not restricted to IITs. The 2025 edition attracted participants from premier NITs, IISc, and leading research institutes across the country.

How to Prepare

The Integral Cup tests speed, depth, and creative problem-solving across multiple mathematical domains. A focused preparation strategy matters.

For Round 1 (Speed and Foundations):

  • Work through standard undergraduate problem sets in your chosen tracks.
  • Focus on accuracy under time pressure.
  • Brush up on the core techniques in each track—combinatorics and graph algorithms for Discrete Mathematics, modular arithmetic and prime theory for Number Theory, and so on.

For Round 2 (Depth and Rigour):

  • Move to harder, multi-step problems that require combining techniques.
  • Practice writing clear, rigorous solutions—not just arriving at the right answer.

For Round 3 (Creative Problem-Solving):

  • This is where mathematical maturity matters most. Work on problems that require original thought rather than standard methods.
  • The integration bee format rewards quick recognition of patterns and elegant manipulations. If you're interested in how this translates to quantitative work, our guide to the National Probability Challenge covers a sibling competition in the same ecosystem.

Why the Integral Cup Matters

Mathematics competitions have a long history as a pipeline for quantitative talent. Jane Street's title sponsorship is not incidental—the firm's interview process is built around exactly the kind of mathematical reasoning the Integral Cup tests. A strong performance here is a direct signal to the firms that hire quants.

The Integral Cup's structure—offline preliminaries at 50+ centres, an online Olympiad for the top 500, and a two-day finale for the top 40—mirrors the escalating selectivity of a quant recruitment process. It's a serious filter, and passing through it means something.

If you're building toward a career in quantitative finance, the Integral Cup is one of the most direct routes available to you in India.

Competitions like the Integral Cup sharpen mathematical reasoning. AlphaNova tests whether that reasoning survives contact with noisy, real-world data.
