Novelty probe - can a novel result be discarded?

Nonius and Lexy gave opposite answers on this one, so I would like to pin it before I spend a probe.

Nonius ran a probe himself (Aug 31, 01:57) and said you get the choice - let it register and take a slot, or reject the submission. Lexy answered the same question with "no there's not".

The case I care about is a result that comes back novel. Can that one be discarded, or is the discard path only for a not-novel result?

It matters because of the season pot. If a novel probe auto-commits, then probing something genuinely new late in a cycle drops it into the pot in a cycle where it cannot place, and the probe is only safe on artifacts I already intend to submit. If I can say no, the probe is useful any time.

perhaps the UI answers this plainly once you run one, but the two answers in the thread do not agree.
